Discipleship and 1824 [by Tim Bowen, 14/01/2005]
Discipleship. What does that really mean for Christians living in Sydney in 2005? Does it mean we don the sandals and wander around the streets of Narwee for three years? Well, we could do that, but there's more than one way to do things in this world...
1824 Discipleship is about growing in our own relationship with God, and helping others grow in theirs. We already have small groups meeting three nights a week to study God's word, to pray together and encourage each other in their lives as Christians. It is also about following up newcomers and helping them feel at home, as well as keeping up with those who aren't in small groups. Next year, we’re also planning:
- a mentoring program, linking up younger Christians with older Christians for mutual encouragement and spiritual growth
- a prayer triplets program, grouping together people to support each other in prayer and accountability
- a series of "all-in" nights where we get together as a big group to worship God, learn from his word and think about how it works in everyday life
- more emphasis on training and discipling emerging leaders.
By faith and prayer, we hope to achieve all this, and more, so as 1824 as a group can live out the real purpose in life - to glorify God.
